Monday's Local Mum Ellie Halliwell

Where do you live in Sydney’s East?

I lived in Bondi Beach for ten years before a two year stint in Sydney’s inner West. But our love of Bondi brought us back two months ago!

How many children?

I have a one-and-a-half-year-old son named Tor.

Favourite Local Park?

My favourite park would have to be the one at Bondi Beach, beside Bondi Pavilion.

Favourite Local Beach?

The North end of Bondi Beach, with the kiddie pool!

Favourite Kid-Friendly Café?

The Centennial Parklands cafe as there’s a park next door and there’s lots of space for kids to run riot.

Favourite Local Café?

Porch and Parlour makes great coffee.

Best Local Date Night ?

Tipica on Hall St - they have unique, authentic Italian pizza and pasta and the space is nice and intimate. I also love North Bondi Fish.

Best local day out?

Favourite activity is spending the morning at Bondi Beach Farmers market, buying produce for the week and indulging in a soy chai latte.

Favourite Local Shop?

Commune on Glenayr is my favourite store for homewares, and I love Watson X Watson for fashion. For food/groceries I love UMU.

What do you do on a wet weather day?

My favourite wet weather location would have to be Gertrude & Alice bookstore - they have such cosy nooks and crannies!

If you had a day to yourself how would you spend it in the East?

My ideal day would begin with either a yoga session or walk along Bondi Beach promenade with the family, followed by a visit to Bondi markets for my Saturday chai hit. Then I’d put Tor down for his sleep and get a slow cooked pot roast in the oven and do a couple of hours of study (I’m studying an advanced dip of Integrative Natural Health - naturopathy).

An afternoon spent at the local park would be followed by aforementioned pot roast dinner and a long bath!

Where have you yet to explore in the eastern suburbs?

I’d love to spend more time at Gordon’s Bay when summer comes - it’s such a beautiful spot.

Working mum or SAHM?

I’m a journalist at The Daily Telegraph and also I have written my own book it’s called A Mother’s Choice.

It details my diagnosis of chronic myeloid Leukaemia and pregnancy, two life events which occurred within a 48 hour period in 2016, and how I dealt with it and what I learned. I also touch on my rise from newspaper delivery kid to a career spanning television, radio, and print covering fashion and show business (including my well-publicised run-in with Harry Styles!).

Motherly Advice?

“If you’re a mum doing the best you can in your present circumstances, then you’re doing an amazing job.”

You can hear Ellie talk about her experience with leukaemia and her stories from her book at the next Mums Society event on Wednesday June 27th 2018 at the Centennial Homestead in Centennial Park -  tickets on sale now + onsite childcare!
